St Joseph's History

The dates of major events in the history of St. Joseph parish are taken from a work complied by Veronica Satorius entitled 'Between the Lines', The Catholic Church in Shasta County, California, 1853-1977. The dates from 1978 to 2005 are available from the St. Joseph Parish Handbook.

1880 The Catholics of Redding purchased a site adjoining the railroad tracks just below town to build a church.
1881 St. Joseph Cemetery, Lincoln Street, Redding was Blessed by Bishop Patrick Manogue on May 26, 1881.
1885 The first Mass was celebrated in the first Catholic Church in Redding on February 1, 1885. The church was located at Sacramento and Oregon Streets, and was served by a priest from Red Bluff.
1903 Redding was made a parish in April, 1903, with Father Thomas Nugent as the first pastor.
1904 The second Catholic Church in Redding was dedicated on April 30, 1905, by Bishop Thomas Grace. It was located at the northeast corner of Court and Sacramento Streets. The old church was moved to the rear of the new church and was used as a residence for the pastor.
1907 The Catholic Church and priest's residence were destroyed by fire.
1910 The third Catholic Church was dedicated on March 13, 1910 by Bishop Thomas Grace. It was built at the northeast corner of Court and Sacramento Streets, the site of the previous church which had been destroyed by fire.
1941 The Sisters of the Holy Family opened a nursery school in the old parish house and continued their work in the parish for eight years.
1942 The new St. Joseph Cemetery and Mausoleum, on Highway 299 West, was dedicated by Bishop Robert J. Armstrong on July 7, 1942.
1946 The Sisters of Mercy opened St. Joseph School in the basement of the Church. There were two grades the first year.
1947 Father Francis A. Moore, S.J. celebrated his first solemn high mass in St. Joseph Church on June 29, 1947. He was the first member of St. Joseph Parish to become a priest.
1952 Monsignor John O'Connor was appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in June of 1952.
1953 St. Joseph School on Gold Street was dedicated by Monsignor William Coen on May 3, 1953.

1959
St. Michael the Archangel Church in Central Valley was dedicated by Bishop Joseph T. McGucken on July 19, 1959.
1964 Land was purchased for a church on Shasta View Drive in the Enterprise area.
1964 St. Joseph Church was destroyed by fire on May 24,1964. Church services were held in the multi-purpose building at St. Joseph School until a new church was constructed.
1965 The fourth Catholic Church was constructed at the southwest corner of Gold Street and Walnut Avenue. It was dedicated by Bishop Alden J. Bell on April 2, 1965.
1971 St. Joseph School celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a homecoming dinner honoring former priests of the parish and faculty members and graduates of St. Joseph.
1978 St. Joseph Parish celebrated its Diamond Jubilee on October 15, 1978, with a Mass concelebrated by Bishop Alden J. Bell and priests who had formerly served in the parish.
1978 The first Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Center in Palo Cedro was celebrated on December 17, 1978.
1979 Daniel Carter of Central Valley was ordained a priest by Bishop Frances A. Quinn in St. Joseph Church on November 17, 1979. Father Carter is a member of the Society of Mary, known as the Marists.

1980
Monsignor John O'Connor retired on August 31, 1980 after having served as Pastor of St. Joseph Parish for twenty-eight years.
1981 St. Joseph Parish was divided on August 1, 1980 with the establishment of a new parish east of the Sacramento River. Our Lady of Mercy Church on Shasta View Drive was dedicated on October 2, 1983.

1982
David Gasman and Colby Smith were ordained Deacons by Bishop Francis A Quinn in St. Joseph Church on June 14, 1981.
1981 Monsignor Russell G. Terra was appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish on November 29, 1981.
1984 St. Joseph Preschool was constructed on Airpark Drive. The Preschool was dedicated by Bishop Francis A. Quinn in October, 1984.
1983 St. Michael the Archangel Church in Central Valley celebrates a 25th anniversary Mass with Bishop Francis A. Quinn.

1985
Frank A. Lopez of Central Valley was ordained Deacon by Bishop Francis A. Quinn at Our Lady of Mercy Church on June 8, 1985.
1989 St. Joseph Preschool added the East Wing. The new wing was dedicated by Bishop Francis A. Quinn on September 21, 1989.
1992 Mike Mangas was ordained Deacon by Bishop Francis A. Quinn at St. Joseph Church on June 14, 1992.
1992 Music/Science Rooms added to St. Joseph School.
1997 St. Joseph School adds a Fifth Grade Classroom.
1998 St. Joseph School Library/Computer Center completed.
1999 New sound system added to the gym of St. Joseph School.
2001 Playground of St. Joseph School remodeled and completed.
2003 St. Joseph Parish celebrates its centennial anniversary.
2004 Monsignor Russell G. Terra retires as St. Joseph's Pastor after 23 years.
2005 Fr. Eduino Silveira is appointed as St. Joseph's new Pastor. 7880
