St. Joseph Cemetery, Lincoln Street, Redding was Blessed by Bishop Patrick Manogue on May 26, 1881. |

The first Mass was celebrated in the first Catholic Church in Redding on February 1, 1885. The church was located at Sacramento and Oregon Streets, and was served by a priest from Red Bluff. |

Redding was made a parish in April, 1903, with Father Thomas Nugent as the first pastor. |

The second Catholic Church in Redding was dedicated on April 30,
1905, by Bishop Thomas Grace. It was located at the northeast corner of Court and Sacramento Streets. The old church was moved to the rear of the new church and was used as a residence for the pastor. |

The Catholic Church and priest's residence were destroyed by fire. |

The third Catholic Church was dedicated on March 13, 1910 by Bishop Thomas Grace. It was built at the northeast corner of Court
and Sacramento Streets, the site of the previous church which had been destroyed by fire. |

The Sisters of the Holy Family opened a nursery school in the old parish house and continued their work in the parish for eight years. |

The new St. Joseph Cemetery and Mausoleum, on Highway 299 West, was dedicated by Bishop Robert J. Armstrong on July 7, 1942. |

The Sisters of Mercy opened St. Joseph School in the basement of the Church. There were two grades the first year. |

Father Francis A. Moore, S.J. celebrated his first solemn high mass in St. Joseph Church on June 29, 1947. He was the first member of St. Joseph Parish to become a priest. |

Monsignor John O'Connor was appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in June of 1952. |

St. Joseph School on Gold Street was dedicated by Monsignor William Coen on May 3, 1953. |

St. Michael the Archangel Church in Central Valley was dedicated by Bishop Joseph T. McGucken on July 19, 1959. |

Land was purchased for a church on Shasta View Drive in the Enterprise area. |

St. Joseph Church was destroyed by fire on May 24,1964. Church services were held in the multi-purpose building at St. Joseph School until a new church was constructed. |

The fourth Catholic Church was constructed at the southwest corner of Gold Street and Walnut Avenue. It was dedicated by Bishop Alden J. Bell on April 2, 1965. |

St. Joseph School celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a homecoming dinner honoring former priests of the parish and faculty members and graduates of St. Joseph. |

St. Joseph Parish celebrated its Diamond Jubilee on October 15, 1978, with a Mass concelebrated by Bishop Alden J. Bell and priests who had formerly served in the parish. |

Daniel Carter of Central Valley was ordained a priest by Bishop Frances A. Quinn in St. Joseph Church on November 17, 1979. Father Carter is a member of the Society of Mary, known as the Marists. |

Monsignor John O'Connor retired on August 31, 1980 after having served as Pastor of St. Joseph Parish for twenty-eight years. |

St. Joseph Parish was divided on August 1, 1980 with the establishment of a new parish east of the Sacramento River. Our Lady
of Mercy Church on Shasta View Drive was dedicated on October 2, 1983. |

David Gasman and Colby Smith were ordained Deacons by Bishop Francis A Quinn in St. Joseph Church on June 14, 1981. |

Frank A. Lopez of Central Valley was ordained Deacon by Bishop Francis A. Quinn at Our Lady of Mercy Church on June 8, 1985. |
